A lecture entitled “Shadow Education in Japan: the evolution and the role of private tutoring industry” was given to about 40 students and faculty members of the Department of East Asian Studies of the University of Delhi. The increasing demand and diversification of out-of-school education (Shadow Education) is a phenomenon also seen in India, leading to active discussions and Q&A sessions on the similarities and differences between the Shadow Education in India and Japan, as well as its role in society. Not only students, but also faculty members showed great interest in the emergence of a new type of non-formal education (private school children) that combines “academic learning” to improve academic skills and “lessons” to form non-cognitive skills.
A lecture on the same topic as at the University of Delhi was given to 38 students and faculty members of the School of Social Science, Zakir Husain Centre for Educational Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Here, the participating students actively participated in the lecture, asking questions and engaging in discussions from the very beginning of the lecture.
A student from a different college came to the lecture having read Associate Professor Ohara's paper and showed an eagerness to receive guidance for research in Japan.
The Japan Scholar Program will continue to send researchers in various fields, regardless of their fields of study or research to South Asia, aiming to promote exchanges among researchers and students through lectures.
