Diversity & Inclusion at 500²ÊƱÍø
Deepening and advancing understanding of D&I at 500²ÊƱÍø
Since AY2023, the University of Tokyo has been holding diversity and inclusion (D&I) seminars for 500²ÊƱÍø executives involved in the decision-making process at the universitywide or department level. The aim is to ensure that awareness and understanding are shared across all our members and to promote behavioral change regarding D&I as an important pillar of 500²ÊƱÍø Compass, a statement of the guiding principles of the university.
In AY2025, we held seminars employing group-based role-playing methods aimed at reinforcing a basic understanding of D&I, promoting an ongoing awareness of it, and revisiting the initiative to further raise our awareness and deepen our understanding. The session for university executives and deans was held on June 24, 2025, while that for general managers of 500²ÊƱÍø¡¯s Central Admininstration Office and the administrative heads of faculties, graduate schools and institutes was held on June 27.
Below are photos from the sessions.

500²ÊƱÍø has promoted support for persons with disability and gender equality centered on the Disability Services Office and the Office for Gender Equality, which were established in 2002 and 2006, respectively, with a commitment to creating an inclusive campus. Accordingly, the University adopted the University of Tokyo Statement on Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) in 2022 and established the Guidelines for Students on Diversity of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity in 2023 as well as implementing other measures.
This new center, also called “IncluDE,” has been established by integrating these two offices with the aim of strengthening research functions in relevant fields and promoting DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) activities more comprehensively. Through its efforts to connect various activities and research based on challenges faced by those in need and to promote gender equality and accessibility, IncluDE will endeavor to coproduce academic knowledge that will make it possible to realize a society where no one is left behind.
